Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Analyzer
Aerodynamic Modeling & Kinematic Performance Tool
Overview
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs), such as Darrieus and Savonius rotors, operate independently of wind direction, making them well suited for turbulent, low-altitude, and urban wind profiles. However, calculating instantaneous blade angle of attack, stall onset, and net torque throughout a 360-degree rotation requires solving complex multi-streamtube or vortex equations.
This analyzer provides an interactive engineering framework to model rotor geometry, evaluate aerodynamic blade forces, and generate power coefficient ($C_p$) vs. Tip Speed Ratio ($\lambda$) curves to guide physical prototyping and structural material selection.
Key Technical Focuses
| System Parameter | Methodology / Implementation |
|---|---|
| Aerodynamic Model | Double-Multiple Streamtube (DMST) momentum theory |
| Airfoil Polars | NACA 0012 / 0018 aerodynamic lift and drag coefficient interpolation |
| Dynamic Stall | Gormont modified dynamic stall correction for high-pitch rates |
| Blade Kinematics | Variable chord solidity ($Nc / R$), aspect ratio, and pitch angle offset |
Architecture & Fabrication Integration
The computational engine is designed to export parametric profile coordinates and load vectors directly into 3D CAD environments (such as Fusion 360) to drive generative spar geometry, hub mounting brackets, and 3D printable blade root test sections.
